SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Summer Internship Program goal is to expand learning into the work environment.  The Summer Internship Program provides high school and college students with experiences in productive work settings to achieve desired educational outcomes.  This program is funded in part by a grant from the Fremont Area Community Foundation in partnership with the Newaygo County Regional Educational Service Agency.  Internships are available to Newaygo County high school and college students between the ages of 16 and 21. 

 

Program Dates & Deadlines:

Student Information | 2024 Summer Internship Program

The Summer Internship Program, funded by the Fremont Area Community Foundation in partnership with NC RESA, is open to Newaygo County students aged 16-21, with preference given to those without prior work experience.

Objectives:

The program aims to integrate learning with work experience for high school and college students, fostering attitudes, skills, and knowledge related to work, careers, and life roles.

Guidelines:

1. Work-based training involves duties outlined in the Worksite Position Request, benefiting the trainee.

2. Trainees, supervised by a mentor, don't replace regular employees and aren't guaranteed a job afterward.

3. Worksite positions are posted on the NC RESA website under Summer Internship link or www.ncresa.org/sip

4. Selected candidates will be notified by NC RESA, and employers will conduct interviews between April 8–12.

5. Interns must attend a pre-employment online orientation, and those under 18 need a parent present.

6. Interns must adhere to labor laws, working a maximum of 10 hours/day, 40 hours/week, between 6:00 a.m. and 11:30 p.m., with no overtime.

7. Training occurs under a written agreement between the school district and the employer.

8. Weekly time records are required for student attendance verification.

9. Students receive safety training before placement; hazardous work is limited, supervised, and documented.

10. Internships start after a signed Training Agreement and NC RESA orientation, with a maximum of 200 hours over 10 weeks, concluding by August 9.

Employer Information | 2024 Summer Internship Program

The Summer Internship Program for actively enrolled Newaygo County high school and/or college students between the ages of 16 and 21 will be available this summer.  This program is open to businesses and non-profit organizations with offices in Newaygo County.  They are invited to participate with preference given to applicants that have not received an intern in recent years.  

If your business/organization is interested in applying for a Summer Intern, the “Worksite Position Request” deadline is Sunday, February 25, 2024. All forms will are available to complete on-line, at the NC RESA website at www.ncresa.org/sip

All final position requests received from the participating businesses/non-profit agencies will be posted on the NC RESA website designated exclusively for the Summer Internship Program.  We will inform all worksites of our committee’s decisions for placement with you at this time. 

Student applicants may access the NC RESA Summer Internship website between March 4 – 15, to view the list of employers and available positions via the Available Worksites link.  Student applications must be submitted by March 15, with student placements being funded in part by a grant from Fremont Area Community Foundation. 

NC RESA will notify students selected to participate in the interview process by the email provided on their application.  It is the responsibility of the employer to contact the approved student(s) to make arrangements for an interview. Employers selected for a summer intern will have at least 3 candidates (if available) to interview for the position opening. Interviews must take place between April 8 - 12, 2024. Employers will be asked to submit their top three candidates in order of preference to NC RESA by Friday, April 19.  Placements will be assigned by May 6. 

The internship runs from June 10 until August 9, 2024. 

WORKSITE AGREEMENT REQUIREMENTS 

 

  1. All work activities shall be consistent with the requested position, result in a benefit to the community, and be useful in terms of enhancing the intern's employability. 

  2. Worksite expectations shall be consistent with those encountered in the unsubsidized world of work. 

  3. Sufficient equipment shall be available to perform the work. 

  4. Time schedules shall be planned to effectively perform the work requested and enough meaningful work shall be available to keep the intern on task. 

  5. The intern’s employment activity must be supervised by an experienced and qualified person (work-based mentor.) 

  6. The intern will be learning new skills and supervisors shall enforce good work habits including promptness, attendance, and appropriate dress and work behaviors. 

  7. Safety standards shall be met, including the provisions under the "Right to Know" Act.  The worksite shall provide adequate orientation and training to the intern in the use of potentially hazardous equipment and supplies.  Work for interns ages 16-17 shall be in accordance with the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act, Michigan Youth Employment Standards Act (Act 90, Public Acts of 1978), and guidelines contained in the Newaygo County School-to-Work Education Work-based Learning Handbook. 

  8. The intern and supervisor shall maintain accurate time and attendance records.  The intern shall be compensated for only those hours actually worked. 

  9. No regular employees shall be displaced with this program, and the intern shall not fill a job opening created by laying-off or terminating the employment of another employee in anticipation of this program.  An intern may not be used solely to fill staff vacancies created by vacations or other time-off for the organization's regular employees. 

  10. The concurrent approval of the applicable labor union or collective bargaining unit has been obtained for the position requested under this agreement.
